The political division in the United States today is so profound rational thought seems in short supply. Opposite sides have virtually abandoned civil discourse and react in a negative way without listening to the other side. With the future at stake, there is only one thing most Americans agree on. The people's business is not being done. They blame Democrats and Republicans equally it seems. This leaves an opening for groups like the Maryland Libertarian Party to gain strength and increase membership.
The majority of Americans do not really know what Libertarians stand for or who they are. Even those who think they know a little about Libertarians usually have most of it wrong. The centerpiece of Libertarianism is individual freedom. They are in favor of limiting the power of the federal government. Libertarians don't want politicians inserting themselves in their lives.
Libertarians don't want Republicans making personal or moral choices for them. They don't want Democrats deciding how to spend their money. The group believes in free trade and the legalization of drugs. They want to abolish gun control laws. Libertarians don't believe in campaign finance reform.
On social issues Libertarians are liberal. They're strong believers in personal choice. The group doesn't think the federal government has any business deciding who consenting adults can marry or formalize relationships with. They don't think individuals charged with drug possession and use should be prosecuted because Libertarians consider these offenses victimless crimes. They believe the capital punishment should be put on hold indefinitely.
When it comes to economics Libertarians are conservative. They are not believers in regulation, and think open competition between businesses is the best policy. If they were in power they would dismantle Social Security and eliminate the Internal Revenue Service and income taxes. Libertarians don't think it's the federal government's business to bailout the under served. It is their belief that a free market society would pressure individuals to contribute to charities and other organizations that could meet these needs.
The group has gone back and forth on the subject of abortion. A few years ago, the platform was pro-abortion declaring that the government had no right to interfere with an individual's personal decision in this matter. Recently it has taken a more centrist stance. One proposed platform states that taxpayers should not bear the expense of an individual's personal decisions. The group has proposed the elimination of regulations restricting access to over-the-counter contraceptives.
Libertarians are isolationists when it comes to foreign policy. They do not believe the armed forces of the United States should be used for anything but national defense. They would not deploy any military branch to any other part of the globe for any reason. They do not think the United States should be in the business of policing foreign nations.
Libertarians do not believe in giving foreign aid. They would eliminate any security clearances that restrict access to information they believe American citizens have a right to. The Libertarian Party is non-interventionist, economically conservative, and socially liberal.
