During the last presidential campaign, people who liked Donald Trump were often afraid to say so. Few put Trump-Pence stickers on their car bumpers, and some who did had their cars vandalized. On the east coast, at least anywhere near a large city, people hesitated to put a sign in their yard. Today, things have changed a bit, but still many fail to welcome Trump supporters.
This is so un-American that it's amazing to many that it can happen here. Unfortunately, the hostility to the President shows no sign of abating. Those who chant 'Not my president' feel free to show disrespect to the differing views of others. Conservative speakers are denied access to college campuses, hostile comments are posted on social media, and bureaucracies feel empowered to violate constitutionally-granted freedoms of citizens.
The perception is that liberals are in the majority in this country, but in fact more people are conservative. Millions of Americans simply want to work hard and live under a rule of law. They prefer that their government interfere with them as little as possible.
One problem is that conservatives tend to be quieter than liberals. Their marches are conducted with dignity and restraint. Their comments are low-key, and they don't advocate violence or mass protests. Add to that the fact that the major news outlets ignore things like the March For Life or the National Day of Prayer rallies, and many conservative ideas go unheard.
Polls which are deliberately slanted to advance the progressive agenda get blazoned on front pages or TV news shows, but Trump's approval numbers continue to rise. However, this doesn't seem to matter to those who have the public forums. The views of college students or those employed in government agencies - hardly impartial by-standers - are accepted as 'mainstream'. It's little wonder that most conservatives limit their political interactions to online comments or phone calls to the White House comment line.
Colleges now routinely suppress free speech; conservative speakers are unwelcome. The students accept this curtailing of the First Amendment almost without question. Teens rally for gun control, even though the most dangerous neighborhoods are the ones with the strictest anti-gun laws. Experts vainly point out that an armed citizenry is vital to freedom, or that armed guards save lives (otherwise why bodyguards and Secret Service details?).
Having a biased media is a great danger to a free society. When fake news is reported daily and serious topics sidelined for shallow stories, the people are uninformed and confused. A good example is the consistent bias against the nation of Israel. Fortunately, President Trump is a staunch supporter of America's main ally in the Middle East.
Fortunately conservatives did vote in the last presidential election. It's vital that they continue to go to the polls every time they have that right and responsibility. Only by electing leaders that share conservative values can the silent majority get things back on track again.
